Im Jahr 2014, anlässlich Riga – Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2014, prägte Lettland seine erste 2 Euro Sondermünze.
Das Hauptmotiv der Münze zeigt die Skyline von Riga und den historischen Stadtkern, der von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe
erklärt worden ist. Oberhalb dieses Motivs ist der Schriftzug „EIROPAS KULTURAS GALVASPILSETA“ (Kulturhauptstadt Europas) zu lesen. Unterhalb befindet sich der Name der Stadt und das Ausgabejahr „RIGA – 2014“ sowie darunter das Kürzel des Ausgabestaats „LV“.
Der äußere Münzring enthält die zwölf Sterne der Europäischen Union.
2 Euro Gedenkmünzen sind bimetall Münzen.
